'Ted' still
The London Olympics may be dominating the headlines at the moment, but August is still jam-packed with plenty of cinematic treats for those not enamoured by the sporting action. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane makes his big screen directorial debut with Ted, the Bourne franchise returns with Jeremy Renner stepping into Matt Damon's shoes and The Expendables reuniting for another round of gun-blazing carnage.

Digital Spy previews the five must-see movies for August below:

Ted
Release Date: August 1
Why you should see it: Mark Wahlberg and his talking teddy bear smoke, drink and swear their way through this hilarious comedy from Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane. The most profane fairytale you could ever imagine, Ted is stuffed to the rafters with quickfire gags, '80s references and cgreat cameos (you'll never look at Flash Gordon star Sam Jones the same way again!).

The Bourne Legacy
Release Date: August 13
Why you should see it: Bourne screenwriter Tony Gilroy returns to the series to write and direct this "sidequel", which follows Jeremy Renner's agent from training programme Outcome. Edward Norton's shady government operative is pulling the strings for a host of black ops organisations (including Jason Bourne's Treadstone), while series regulars such as Joan Allen and David Strathairn return as events unfold in parallel to the Bourne Ultimatum storyline.

Brave
Release Date: August 13
Why you should see it: Pixar breaks new ground with its latest movie Brave. The Scotland-set adventure marks the first time the animation studio has featured a female protagonist and their first ever princess. Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson are among the voice cast for the film, which sees Princess Merida defy her parents' wishes to marry and strive to undo a curse unleashed on her mother.

The Expendables 2
Release Date: August 16
Why you should see it: Sylvester Stallone's action epic sees Jean-Claude Van Damme, Liam Hemsworth and Chuck Norris join the likes of Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham for this high-octane sequel. Expect this blockbuster to be armed to the teeth with both artillery and one-liners as the muscle-bound team set out on a revenge mission deep behind enemy lines.

Total Recall
Release Date: August 29
Why you should see it: Arnie's '90s sci-fi classic gets dusted off for this remake from Underworld director Len Wiseman. Colin Farrell leads the cast as Doug Quaid, a factory worker who gets swept up into an espionage plot after getting memory implants from the Rekall company. Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale get down to some gun-toting, while Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston and Bill Nighy provide stellar support to the lead cast. Fans of the three-breasted woman from the original need not panic - she will be back!
