'Iron Man 3' trailer: Scene-by-scene recap - pictures

The first full trailer for Iron Man 3 was released online this morning (October 23), offering a taste of the darker tone Kiss Kiss Bang Bang helmer Shane Black has brought to the franchise.

"I can't sleep, and when I do I have nightmares," Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark admits in voiceover, before going on to admit that there are "100 people who want to kill [him]". Among those people are Ben Kingsley's Mandarin and Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian, both of whom are glimpsed along with Rebecca Hall's scientist Maya Hansen.

The teaser opens with Tony Stark crashing down and powered out in the snow. "I've got a lot of apologies to make," says Stark.

The trailer also sees Stark's Malibu beach house spectacularly destroyed, and a mysterious figure in the Iron Patriot armour is seen attacking Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) in bed.
