'The Expendabelles': Which female action stars deserve a comeback?

By
After two Expendables movies oozing with testosterone, macho banter and faded male action stars, it was inevitable that the supposedly fairer sex would be awarded with their own version. Bring on the oestrogen...

Don't expect 'The Expendabelles' to revolve around dish-washing and ironing though, as there are plenty of actresses very capable of pulverising derrières like their male counterparts. Haywire's Gina Carano and Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff have been reportedly cast, so it's time to turn our attention to female stars of yesteryear who we'd love to have another bite of the bullet...

Sigourney Weaver
In space no-one can hear you scream, which is irrelevant for Weaver's Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise as she's far too busy battling it out with monstrous matriarchs and facehuggers. Can you imagine the audience's reaction if she donned a mechanical cargo-loader exosuit for The Expendabelles?

Brigitte Nielsen
The 6 foot 2 inch-tall Danish star is still in her 40s, but her career has sadly plummeted into a world of reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother and the German version of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here. Spare the Amazonian actress's imposing frame from career hell and give her a comeback that her Red Sonja and Rocky IV co-stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone received with The Expendables, please!

Linda Hamilton
Now, it's time for the female star of The Terminator and its sequel to say "I'll be back!" Rarely seen on the big screen since her Sarah Connor days, the actress mainly crops up in TV shows like Chuck. It's time to remind the masses of the guile and guts that conquered Arnie back in the day!

Grace Jones
The fierce and eccentric singer-model-actress was a brawny buttkicker in '80s flicks Conan The Destroyer and A View To A Kill - and still cuts a formidable presence at 64. It's time the electrifying icon pulled her bumper up to the big screen again.

Elisabeth Shue
After years of playing wholesome girlfriend fodder, Elisabeth Shue's career took a drastically dark turn when she played a hooker in Leaving Las Vegas, followed by the female leads in action movies The Saint and Hollow Man. 2010's Piranha 3-D shows she can still cut it!

Geena Davis
As The Long Kiss Goodnight demonstrated, Geena Davis is a versatile performer capable of packing a powerful punch. Her award-winning archery skills in real life could be a handy asset, but just don't make her use a sword given her Cutthroat Island experience…

Demi Moore
Shaving her hair off and reprising her role as GI Jane would be a masterstroke for The Expendabelles. Failing that, she could always play a fierce office boss type. Her character in Disclosure caused many men to weep in fear.

Pam Grier
Quentin Tarantino gave the star of blaxpoitation flicks Foxy Brown and Coffy a well-deserved comeback with 1997's Jackie Brown, but she needs another resurrection. Minor roles in Larry Crowne and The Man With The Iron Fists will not suffice!

Michelle Yeoh
Before attaining global stardom in Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Yeoh was renowned for administering brutal bashings in Hong Kong action movies. A return to basics would be appreciated - and not just to help atone for her appearance as a witch in the risible The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor!

Lucy Lawless
Having shot to stardom as Xena: Warrior Princess, Lawless has cultivated a strong TV career at playing strong but sexy roles in Battlestar Galactica and Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Her big-screen career highlight deserves to be something better than a dominatrix in Eurotrip!

Catherine Mary Stewart
Before gaining the highest accolade possible in Hollywood - a role in Weekend At Bernie's - Catherine Mary Stewart made her name as a spunky heroine in mid '80s cult classics Night Of The Comet and The Last Starfighter. We're sure that pluckiness and BIG HAIR still remains - and needs to be witnessed on the big screen again!

Natasha Henstridge
The luminous Canadian star made a stunning cinematic debut as the genetically engineered alien hybrid in Species, embarking on a murder spree while milking men dry of their seed. Yet her career spiraled downwards after a lead role in 2001's Ghost Of Mars, and she's now married to Darius from Pop Idol. Hit me baby one more time…

The Expendables 2 is out on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download now.
