Digital Spy counts down the ten most spectacular movie trailers from the last 12 months below...
10. The Avengers
"We're not a team, we're a timebomb!" exclaims Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in the final theatrical trailer for Marvel's superhero ensemble The Avengers. The Joss Whedon-directed flick is the highest-grossing movie of 2012, and this promo stacks up money shot after money shot to deliver the goods.
9. The Great Gatsby
Having put his own unique spin on Romeo and Juliet, Aussie auteur Baz Luhrmann turns his attention to F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. With glitz, glamour, Jay-Z and Kanye West, this trailer promises a film unlike any other interpretation of Fitzgerald's classic novel.
8. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The first teaser for The Hobbit debuted all the way back in December 2011, and its follow-up served up more of Peter Jackson's incredible vision of Middle-earth. We see Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins and the company of dwarfs setting off on their adventure, and get a tantalisingly brief glimpse of Bilbo and Gollum's "game of riddles".
7. Man of Steel
Continuing the elegiac, Terrence Malick-like tone of its debut teaser, this month's Man of Steel trailer promises a darker, more thoughtful take on the classic DC Comics hero. The Christopher Nolan influence is evident from the start.
6. Les Misérables
Anne Hathaway's rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream' soundtracked the first trailer for Tom Hooper's Les Mis, making it a spine-tingling teaser that brilliantly whets the appetite for the musical adaptation.
5. Star Trek Into Darkness
Those hoping that the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer would answer any of the questions posed by Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious villain Khan't have been happy, but there are clues dotted across the oh-so-brief footage as to where this sequel is heading...
4. The Master
"I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist and a theoretical philosopher. But above all, I am a man, a hopelessly inquisitive man, just like you." An unstoppable force meets an unmovable object in Paul Thomas Anderson's trailer for The Master, which offers up glimpses of the film's stand-out "processing" scene and Joaquin Phoenix's jail cell meltdown.
Though many felt let down by Ridley Scott's return to science fiction, there's no doubt that it had one of the most eye-catching marketing campaigns of 2012. The below trailer premiered during a Homeland ad break, then followed it up with a second ad pulling in tweets of viewer reactions. Innovative to say the least!
2. Cloud Atlas
The majority of movie trailers normally clock in at around the two-minute mark, so it was a surprise to see The Wachowskis serve up an extended, near-six-minute preview of their latest epic Cloud Atlas. Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess and many more are weaved into this visually dazzling, M83-accompanied trailer.
1. The Dark Knight Rises
Released through Nokia, this was the final trailer to land before The Dark Knight Rises hit cinemas this summer. The trailer is light on dialogue, driven mainly by ominous chanting and Hans Zimmer's powerful score, but it was the perfect primer for Christopher Nolan's trilogy closer.
