This new Tomb Raider sees a twentysomething Lara survive a shipwreck and have to fight for her life on a perilous tropical island. The game creators have cited 127 Hours and The Descent as inspirations for their series retooling, while Hollywood super-producer Graham King's GK Films is taking a leaf out of the game's book for a fresh big screen story.
In an interview with Digital Spy back in 2011, King shed light on a possible approach to the new Tomb Raider, saying: "For me it's re-inventing the wheel a bit, it's a reboot.
"We're going back before she was Lara Croft, so it's a much more emotional character piece. She's in search of her parents."
This all begs the crucial question: Who should play the new Lara Croft?
Now that Angelina Jolie has outgrown the gun-toting role, all eyes are on moviedom's new batch of young female stars to see who will take the coveted part. Will a well-known face be anointed the new Lara, or could Hollywood turn to a rising star à la Jennifer Lawrence and The Hunger Games?
