The Hobbit, Anchorman 2, American Hustle: 5 must-watch December movies

By
This month sees a high-profile new release from Disney, a period drama starring Daniel Radcliffe and an eagerly-awaited comedy sequel that brings back a certain mustachioed San Diego news anchor.

Digital Spy rounds up the five movies you need to see this December below...

Frozen
Release date: December 6
Why you should see it: Disney rediscovered some of its old magic with recent offerings Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, but the House of Mouse well and truly hits it out the park with their take on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen. We've already seen Frozen (and given it an emphatic thumbs up), so start preparing yourself for a brand new all-singing, all-dancing Disney classic.

Kill Your Darlings
Release date: December 6
Why you should see it: Beat generation writers Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs find themselves pulled into the murder of David Kammerer in this period drama from director John Krokidas. Radcliffe (as Ginsberg) and Dane DeHaan (playing murderer Lucien Carr) have already garnered positive reviews from festival screenings, and this will offer up something a little more discerning than the more mainstream fare out this month.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Release date: December 13
Why you should see it: A year on from An Unexpected Journey and we're onto part two of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit adaptation. This time around, we're back with Bilbo and the dwarves as they set out to take back Erebor from the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). The dragon has been discreetly teased across several trailers, so we're eager to see how he's executed on the big screen.

American Hustle
Release date: December 20
Why you should see it: With a cast that includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, and a director in David O Russell who hasn't put a foot wrong of late, this has been top of our must-see list for the entire year, let alone December. Based on the Abscam sting of the late '70s and '80s, this will follow con man Irving Rosenfeld as he's forced into the New Jersey underworld by FBI agent Richie DiMaso.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues
Release date: December 20
Why you should see it: Almost a decade after Ron Burgundy's first hilarious big screen outing, Anchorman's sequel finally arrives with expectation levels sky high. Can it deliver on the hype? With the central quartet all returning, alongside new cast members Harrison Ford, Kristen Wiig, Sacha Baron Cohen and Tina Fey, we're banking on this to send you into 2014 roaring with laughter.
