While Neil LaBute went on to more questionable projects (that 2006 remake of The Wicker Man, for one) he made a blistering debut with this unflinching story of a ruthless and misogynistic business executive (Aaron Eckhart) preying on a deaf female colleague. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw listed the film as one of his top ten of all time in a 2002 Sight & Sound poll.
