Public Enemies (2009)
While Michael Mann's take on the John Dillinger story didn't quite live up to the ridiculously high expectations established by the concept of Bale and Johnny Depp facing off a la Pacino and De Niro in Heat, it was nonetheless refreshing to see Bale return to straightforward, non-franchise drama for his role as dogged FBI agent Melvin Purvis.
