Summary: First published in 1992, Irvin D. Yalom's novel imagines an encounter between philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and one of the founders of psychoanalysis, Viennese doctor Josef Breuer. The meeting occurs in 1882, where the latter must help the philosopher battle pain and despair.
