How did you wind up getting the role in Couples Retreat?
"I did it in a very 2k9 way, or rather 2k8 way. I got my girlfriend to videotape my audition, two weeks before we were meant to shoot. So I did this audition and emailed it to them. They saw that and they also saw clips of my sketch show on YouTube. It was a culmination of those types of things. I did it all sort of remotely from here, it was great!"
Could you give us a taster for your character Sctanley?
"The film is these four super-American couples and they go to this place with a very international flavour. The guy who runs it is Jean Reno and I play the guy who runs the resort. I'm super-duper English. I like to do everything totally by the rules and I think these people are scum secretly. Later on there's a development where you think, 'Maybe he's not so bad after all'. Or you may think he's ten times worse."
Brits in Hollywood films tend to be seen as sinister or baddies.
"I'm definitely being a baddie in it. There's also a thing you have to try and do, which is when you hear a British accent in a Hollywood film, sometimes it snaps you out of it. Especially if you're British yourself. I try to do it in a way where it fits into that Hollywood language."
Someone on your website mentioned your safari suit looks like Christopher Lee's from The Man With The Golden Gun. Does Sctanley have any weird defects at all like that Bond villain's third nipple?
"[He] hasn't got a third nipple, I think he has a fourth nipple! His name is Sctanley spelt with a 'C'. You don't get to see in what way that happens until about two-thirds of the way into the film. It's quite a funny way they introduce it. The first thing this guy tells anybody is his name's Sctanley spelt with a 'C'. Why do they even need to know that? It's just funny!"
And you filmed everything in Bora Bora?
"I went to LA for a costume fitting for a day, then I went to Bora Bora for a month with all the other cast. It's like the most luxurious resort in the world and Universal bought it for a month, there were no tourists there, it was just the cast and the crew of the film. It was like being on an expensive summer camp. I was in one of those huts on stilts where they knew it was just me in there and it was like a honeymoon suite. Every night they would put petals on my pillow and I would have to say, 'Could you stop doing this?' It was probably one of the most high-class problems I've ever had. There's a line in the film about how it looks like a screensaver and it does look computer-generated or something."
Were there any downsides?
"The downsides of it were I was away from my family and it was completely on the other side of the Earth. About two weeks in I was looking at the floor and thinking, 'I don't remember owning a pair of brogues'. I saw this shoe on the floor, then the shoe suddenly appeared in another part of a room. It wasn't a brogue, it was a massive cockroach! You call them water bugs, they sound Disneyesque, this looked like a loafer! They moved so fast it looked like they dematerialised."
How was it working with this cast?
"Vince Vaughn is a movie star. You can't ever take your eyes off him. He's a giant. I'm 6'4", but he towers above me. He's like a God! Jason Bateman is just hilarious, I'd always been a big fan of his from Arrested Development. Sometimes when you meet people you admire it often can be a disappointment. He's not just the nicest guy, but the funniest guy. He was talking to me about jokes and comedy and he's been doing it since he was 10. He's never stopped working and one day he just looked at me and said, 'I have delivered every single type of joke you could imagine, every permutation, every line, every quip'. He's a master."
Do you think there's scope for a sequel?
"I don't know... I've written one, it's mainly based around Sctanley! We'll see, I'd love to do it, they're a great bunch of people. We had a scream making it. When you look at the place we were and then factor in that everyone involved was really lovely, it would be enough to put up with the moccasin-sized cockroach!"
Couples Retreat opens in the UK on Wednesday.
