'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Martin Freeman interview - video

By and Amie Parker-Williams
Martin Freeman has discussed the experience of playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The actor, who takes on the role played by Ian Holm in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, spoke to Digital Spy about the scheduling difficulties that initially prevented him from accepting the part.

"The fact that there was a period when I couldn't do it made it even more attractive," Freeman admitted, before going on to discuss director Peter Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens's passion for Tolkien.

"If you've got a question about character, context, the history of Middle-earth... I once heard Philippa holding forth about the history of the dwarvish race, as if she were talking about the Warsaw Uprising or something. As if it was real. So you're in very good hands."

Freeman later discussed his lengthy one-on-one scene with Andy Serkis, and his lack of contact with Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit.
