Helen Hunt, John Hawkes 'The Sessions' interviews

By and Amie Parker-Williams
Sundance hit The Sessions features a nuanced and poignant turn from John Hawkes, playing a man confined to an iron lung who sets out to finally lose his virginity.

In an Oscar-nominated turn, Helen Hunt plays the sexual surrogate hired to work with Hawkes's Mark.

Digital Spy sat down with Hawkes, Hunt and director Ben Lewin to discuss The Sessions's uniquely intimate sex scenes, and the difference between sex surrogacy and prostitution.

"It was sort of like the movie," Hunt said of her dynamic with Hawkes. "'Hey, nice to meet you, we're going to be naked now', which was perfect.

"I think both of us, more than I even realised at the time, really benefited from the lack of time we spent together."

She also confessed that she found the level of nudity required in the role to be liberating: "It's getting late, who cares? Maybe one of the good things about getting older is like…who cares?"

Lewin went on to discuss the difficulties of avoiding an NC-17 rating, while Hawkes spoke about his research and physical preparation for the role of Mark.

The Sessions is out now in the US, and comes out this Friday (January 18) in the UK.
