Lohan withdrew from the role of Caitlin MacNamara in the Dylan Thomas biopic last year and Maybury turned to Miller to take on the role.
He said: "I actually called Sienna to get Lindsay Lohan's phone number. I'd been speaking to her by email and hadn't had any response so I needed to speak to her direct."
Maybury added that he then told Miller to "stay out of the sun" to keep a porcelain-skinned look for the part.
Miller confessed that she did not have much time to prepare for the role.
"A little under two weeks," she said. "[John and I have] been great friends for years and I knew about the project. I'd heard that there were maybe a few problems. I had an inkling, I was hoping [to get the part]."
