The 2006 original followed an oddball family on the run from a monster that emerged from Seoul's Han River. It grossed more than $60 million worldwide and was picked up for a US remake.
Ning Hao will write and direct the sequel, which is scheduled to begin shooting next year for a late 2009 release.
Producer Choi Yong-bae said: "Chinese film markets are driven by blockbusters with themes of epic drama and martial arts. It's time to provide more varied types of commercial films."
