According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbian director Simon Brand is developing the project, which will be shopped to studios in the coming weeks.
Betancourt, a former presidential candidate of Colombian-French descent, was taken hostage by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in 2002. She was freed last week, along with 14 other captives, after Columbian forces duped the rebels into thinking they were transferring the hostages to another hideout.
The drama will play out from three different perspectives: American, French and Colombian. A French production partner will come on board to co-finance the film.
Director Brand previously helmed Jim Caviezel thriller Unknown and immigration drama Paraiso Travel.
