The actress, who plays Sophie in the musical adaptation, introduced the film at Outfest in Los Angeles but did not stay to walk the red carpet or pose for pictures afterwards.
Carl Larsen, a publicist for the event, announced to the crowd that Seyfried would not be attending the planned meet-and-greet. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the red-carpet arrivals... have been cancelled. I was taken by surprise. There was no explanation," he said.
Mamma Mia! fans in attendance were reportedly furious at the slight, with Page Six quoting one as saying: "Outrageous! How can [Seyfried] diss the gays like that? This is our movie!"
A spokesperson for film studio Universal said: "This was never a red-carpet event. She volunteered to come and introduce the movie and did a great job. There was never a red carpet for her to walk."
