Sir Michael Caine has claimed that Batman producers may be unable to top the success of The Dark Knight.

The actor, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in the movie, spoke after learning that the sequel had broken the opening weekend box office record in the US.

"I think this one will be such a success it will be difficult to do a sequel because we've done one and we've topped it, obviously, and now we've got to top this," Caine told WENN. "That is difficult. That is difficult because we've already broken the box office [record] in American movie history. We've got to break our own record. It's hard."

He added: "This is something. It's not just the best Batman but it's one of the best movies. It really is."

The movie's co-writer David Goyer recently admitted that the prospect of making another sequel is "scary".
