Guillermo del Toro is to produce a remake of horror-thriller Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark.

The Pan's Labyrinth director, who recently signed on to helm The Hobbit and its sequel, will oversee the big screen adaptation of the 1973 TV movie for Miramax.

The original film - which starred Kim Darby, Jim Hutton and Barbara Anderson - focused on a young housewife who finds demon-like creatures in the mansion she shares with her new husband.

The update will be directed by Troy Nixey in his feature debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"It has always been a dream of mine to work on a project with Guillermo, my favourite filmmaker," he said. "I had no idea it would be on my first one out."
