Gillian Anderson has blamed competition from The Dark Knight for the unimpressive performance of the new X-Files movie in the US.

The actress, who reprises her role as Dana Scully in the film, echoed similar comments made by her co-star David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) last week.

She also claimed that US audiences may not appreciate the film because of its low-key approach to storytelling.

"It's had a bit of a rough time in the States. It's opening against one of the highest grossing movies, Batman," Anderson explained. "People in the States are so used to lots of CGI, action and sex and we don't really off a lot of that in this film."

The X-Files: I Want To Believe is in cinemas now.
