It was claimed that the actor was in line to play the title role of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the Joe Carnahan-helmed film, based on the book Mi Hermano Pablo by his brother Roberto Escobar. Christian Bale was also thought to be attached.
However, Bardem told Coming Soon that the rumoured casting was "a mistake" and "wasn't true".
Bale has not confirmed his role in the movie, which was previously slated to begin production in the autumn.
Bardem, who won this year's best supporting actor Oscar for No Country For Old Men, recently pulled out of Rob Marshall's musical Nine due to exhaustion.
