The actor also stars in the project alongside Chris Thornton and James Franco. Thornton penned the script.
It will follow the story of DJ 'Delicious' Dead O'Dwyer (Thornton), who learns the power to cure the sick, but not himself, after investigating faith-healing.
Ruffalo will play a priest that helps Delicious cope with his limited powers, while Franco is cast as a rockstar who utilises the healing skills for his own ends.
The movie will begin shooting in LA later this year.
