Director Barry Levinson's next film will be an adaptation of Pete Dexter's noir novel Train, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The 1950s-set story revolves around San Diego cop Miller Packard and golf caddy Lionel "Train" Walk, who is haunted by an unreported murder. Over the course of the novel, the pair form a friendship which is tested by racial politics.

Allison Burnett will write the movie's screenplay.

Levinson's credits include Good Morning, Vietnam, Rain Man and Wag The Dog. His next film, Hollywood satire What Just Happened? , arrives in UK cinemas on October 10.
