'Thunder' to be revised after "retard" row

A promotional campaign surrounding Ben Stiller's new movie Tropic Thunder is expected to be revised following criticism from disability-advocacy groups.

The movie sees Stiller playing actor Tugg Speedman, who takes on the role of Simple Jack, a mentally handicapped man. One promotional clip for the movie sees the character referred to as a "retard".

Activists have claimed that the language constitutes "hate speech" and initially called for a boycott of the movie. In response, the film's executives set up a meeting with the organisations this week in order to discuss the matter.

A spokesperson for DreamWorks Pictures, which is distributing the movie, told WENN: "It was a very productive meeting."

Revisions to the movie's trailers, as well as sections of the film itself, are now likely as a result of the discussions. The movie is released to cinemas in the US on August 13.
