The project is based on Thurston Clarke's book The Last Campaign: Robert F. Kennedy And 82 Days That Inspired America.
It follows Kennedy's idealistic campaign, which focused on racism, poverty and the Vietnam War. The movie is expected to end with Kennedy's assassination by student Sirhan Sirhan.
Columbus, whose credits include the first two Harry Potter movies and Home Alone, is planning to script the film alone.
