Guy Ritchie has lined up Mark Strong to play the villain in his reinvention of Sherlock Holmes.

Speaking at the BFI's Movie-Con weekend, Ritchie revealed that he will pit Strong, who appears in the director's upcoming gangster film RocknRolla, against Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes.

Ritchie did not name the villain, but Holmes's best-known nemesis is Professor James Moriarty. The movie will take inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic novels and Lionel Wigram's upcoming comic book series.

Strong's previous screen credits include Syriana, Stardust, Sunshine and Revolver.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson declined to comment on the actor's involvement in the film.

Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is scheduled to commence production in October for a 2010 release.
