James McAvoy and Emily Blunt will provide the voices in Shakespeare adaptation Gnomeo And Juliet.

The Miramax CGI project is a "loose and edgy" reworking of the classic play, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

McAvoy and Blunt's characters will be lovers from rival gardens.

Producers Elton John, David Furnish, Baker Bloodworth and Steve Hamilton Shaw are apparently looking for big name stars to fill the supporting roles.

It will not feature Kate Winslet or music by Tim Rice as previously rumoured.

Gnomeo And Juliet is scheduled for release in 2010.
