A very good idea. But, only if Peter Jackson Directs and Ian Holm comes back as Bilbo.

YES!! That is a fabulous idea! There needs to a better version of the Hobbit made anyway -- That old cheesy cartoon doesn't do Tolkein justice.
Dave on December 1st, 2003
of course they should. Peter Jackson is the only person who could make it, and it has to be done by New Line so they can use the same Gollum CGI creation. They have to acquire the rights now!!! Actually I cant believe any single person out there would have anything negative to say about this idea. Just wish King Kong wasnt in the way. Shame there arent any good writers out there who could write original scripts set in the same Tolkien universe because even 4 movies wouldnt be enough.

It would be a great idea just as long as Peter Jackson includes everything that is in the book.

They've done a marvellous job with LOTR, but it could be because they were made back-to-back, with the next film in mind instead of other trilogies where they simply make a sequel to 'make money'. If they stick to the formula, yes. If they do it to 'make more money', then NO, citing the Matrix sequels as a reason... very poor in comparison to the first film. It should simply have been left alone. On it's own Matrix 1 is a classic now, and so is the LOTR Trilogy. Perhaps the fact that it'll be adapted from a book (The Hobbit) offers some hope.

I'd like to see such a film, but my fear is that it would be an anti-climax when (inevitably) compared to the LOTR, since it lacks the epic qualities of the latter, which would also set the expectation level. Its a different kind of story, on a different scale.

I wouldn't mind as long as it holds true to the book. The LOTR films are fine in their own right - but, despite all the promises, still included scenes that don't appear in the books and excluded great chunks from the books which, for my part, are an intrinsic part of the story ... all very frustrating and annoying.

I think enough is enough. The Trilogy is excellent (ROTK ???) and should left alone. Look at what happened with Stars Wars.
Pat Boone on December 1st, 2003
I think it would be great to see where it all started. I think there will be a general sense of being let down when the final movie is done. It was a great trilogy and a great ride!
Lesley Johnson on December 1st, 2003
They should have done the Hobbit first. LOTR is brilliant but if you haven't read the books it needs some explaining. The hobbit could have helped fill in some of the plot lines.

They will obviously make it; Gollum features in The Hobbit

Please no more. I am fed up with all the hype and the money spinning from it. Is my partner the only one stupid enough to buy the normal and extended versions of all the DVDs or are there other gullable people out there.
Abid Hussain on December 1st, 2003
God yeah, it would be great! And let's face it, after the money these films have made, it has to be inevitable, and any movie studio would have to be off their rocker to do it without Peter Jackson.
Steven Smiyh on December 1st, 2003
Yes it is a good idea, The Hobbit is an excellent story and the LOTR team would definitely do it justice
Simon Blick on December 1st, 2003
Would make the whole LotR a more complete set of films.
Gerard (Dublin) on December 1st, 2003
Excellent idea. If Jackson was involved I have no doubt it would be fantastic. No chance of "overkill" - as the LOTR phenomenon has been around for years and years and no one can get tired of the stories.
Martin Anderson on December 1st, 2003
It would be a brilliant idea. I know Sir Ian McKellen is interested in the idea. And as a single movie in itself, would be a great way to tell the story of the Ring's discovery before the Trilogy. Then again who can say no to more Lord of the Rings movie goodness!
