Return of the King was once again the number one choice over the holiday weekend, raking in some $50.6m (£28.5m) in ticket sales and taking the domestic gross to date to $222.3m (£125.1m). The figure makes the movie the second fastest film ever to pass the $200m mark (eleven days), beaten only by last year's release of Spider-Man, which managed the feat in just nine days.
The highest new entry came at number two: Steve Martin's Cheaper By The Dozen, which took $27.6m (£15.5m). Jude Law / Nicole Kidman drama Cold Mountain opened at three with $14.6m (£8.2m), narrowly ahead of Something's Gotta Give, down one place from last week but up a quarter in takings.
Ben Affleck's sci-fi thriller Paycheck made its debut at five ($13.5m, £7.6m), almost as disappointing as the opening for a revamped Peter Pan, which placed seventh ($11.1m, £6.3m).
