The film will follow the early life of Darwin (Bettany) as he develops his theory of evolution.
It will apparently show Darwin's inner turmoil as he struggles to come to terms with "his growing belief in a world where God has no place". Connelly will play the naturalist's deeply religious wife Emma.
The project is based on Randal Keynes's book Annie's Box. Kenyes is Darwin's great-great-grandson.
Also among the cast are Jeremy Northam, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Master And Commander's John Collee will script, while Jon Amiel is directing.
