The post-apocalyptic movie will follow Washington's character fighting to "bring society the knowledge that is key to its redemption", according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It's the first movie the Hughes brothers have directed since From Hell in 2001.
Susan Downey and Joel Silver are producing the project, which begins shooting in New Mexico in January.
