The film, a remake of the 1939 movie of the same name, has been in production since 1994, with Julia Roberts looking to get it made independently at one point.
English told The Orlando Sentinel that the movie had to be updated in order to adapt old-fashioned ideas towards women, society and marriage.
However, English insists that the title is far from being a film for women only.
She said: "I expect men to love this movie, too. If we can just make men feel safe going to see it!"
