The latest movie from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle has picked up the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.

Slumdog Millionaire, which tells the story of a poor Indian boy's rise to fortune, was voted fan favourite at the event.

The prize, which was last year won by David Cronenberg's acclaimed Eastern Promises, is usually considered an indicator of Oscar success.

"It's a great underdog story," said Boyle, who also helmed Shallow Grave and 28 Days Later.
