The first local production by Walt Disney Studios has begun in Russia, according to Variety.

Moscow firm Three-T Studio is to help the company develop Kniga Masterov (The Book Of Masters), a children's movie based on Russian fairy tales.

Scheduled for a 2009 release, the film has a budget of around $7 million and will be written and directed by Disney's Russian head of production and acquisitions Vadim Sokolovsky.

"We are working with a legendary cast, a great director, one of the premier production companies in the world, and - perhaps most importantly - we have a wonderful story that will be a strong addition to the Disney tradition," said Disney production general manager Jason Reed.
