The star, who plays the lead in Ghost Town, told Entertainment Weekly that he rejected the chance to appear in Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Da Vinci Code and a remake of Dudley Moore film Arthur.
Speaking about the Pirates role, Gervais remarked that he "didn't want to sit in a Winnebago for six months waiting to show up as a comedy pirate for two minutes".
He added that he also turned down the chance to play the sidekick of detective Magnum in a remake of the 1980s TV show Magnum P.I., claiming: "I don't want to be the funny butler".
Gervais said earlier this month that he is planning to make his curator character from Night At The Museum funnier in the sequel.
