Bret Easton Ellis's controversial 1991 novel was adapted for the screen eight years ago by Mary Harron. The movie starred Christian Bale as Wall Street banker Patrick Bateman, a self-obsessed yuppie who commits murders and indulges in drug binges.
The Johnson-Roessler Company, The Collective and XYZ Films have teamed up to produce the stage version of the novel.
American Psycho is following a similar trajectory to another social satire Fight Club. Chuck Palahniuk's novel became a film in 1999 and a musical version is in development with director David Fincher and Nine Inch Nails's Trent Reznor.
