Stone told USA Today that he tried to "stay human" when portraying the politician, who is played by Josh Brolin in the movie.
He commented that the work was produced in a similar vein to his 1995 biopic Nixon, which critics expected to be a "hatchet job".
"I am not interested in that radical 15% that hate Bush or the 15 or 20% who love Bush. That's not our audience. Those people probably won't come. I'm interested in that 60% in the American middle who at least have a little more open mind," he said.
Stone recently revealed that Dark Knight star Christian Bale turned down the title role in the movie.
