According to Entertainment Weekly, the comedian is being tipped to front the ceremony after his comic turn at Sunday night's Emmy awards.
"The buzz around town is that Ricky should host the Oscars," a source commented.
Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, Jon Stewart and Billy Crystal are among celebrities who have fronted the event in the past.
The Office star recently claimed that he does not like fame.
