Josh Olson has been hired to write the film adaptation of Lee Child's novel One Shot.
The story centres on Jack Reacher, a former army policeman who comes into contact with an ex-infantry specialist suspected of shooting five people.
Child has written 12 books in the Reacher series, with One Shot being the ninth.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his plans for the movie, Olson commented: "I had just finished watching the first two Dirty Harry movies on Blu-ray and I thought, 'No-one's making movies like that anymore'.
"It coincided perfectly. It's just the kind of movie that I haven't seen in a while. It's a tough, smart, action-oriented thriller."
Olson received an Oscar nomination in 2006 for penning David Cronenberg's A History of Violence.
