George Clooney is reportedly being primed to take on the role of the Lone Ranger in a movie remake of the 1950s television programme.

The actor is said to be interested in the part after Johnny Depp was signed to play the role of sidekick Tonto.

If Clooney takes the part, The Lone Ranger will mark the first time the two actors have teamed up.

"Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger, and the studio’s been talking to him about it," a source remarked.

"Previously it was rumoured that Nic Cage was up for the role, but that rumour died a long time ago. Clooney’s name has come up quite a number of times since."
