Jonathan Liebesman will direct Battle: Los Angeles for producer Neal Moritz and Columbia Pictures.
Liebesman won the job after presenting visual effects sequences - which he filmed in Santa Monica over the summer - and pre-visualised scenes at his pitch meeting.
Chris Bertolini's script revolves around a marine battling aliens on the streets of Los Angeles following a hostile invasion.
South African-born Liebesman's last film was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.
