The Oscar-winning actor will play the legendary jazz trumpeter in a movie for Legende, the firm behind last year's Edith Piaf film La Vie En Rose.
"Armstrong left a monumental mark on our lives and our culture," said Whitaker. "He lived an amazing life and, through his art, shifted the way music was played and would be heard after him, not just here in the US but all over the world."
Actor Charles S. Dutton recently revealed that he is working on a six-hour HBO miniseries about the life of Armstrong.
