Scott Rudin has walked away from his producer role on Kate Winslet's period drama The Reader, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Rudin's exit comes less than two weeks after he issued a statement claiming to be in "complete agreement" with studio boss Harvey Weinstein over the accelerated release of the movie in time for next year's Oscars.

Rumours earlier emerged suggesting that Rudin had clashed with the Weinstein Company over the tight post-production schedule for Stephen Daldry's film.

The producer had been in favour of moving the release back to 2009, allowing Daldry more time to complete the movie and avoid a clash with his and Winslet's Revolutionary Road.

The Reader, based on Bernhard Schlink's 1995 novel about a teenager who discovers that his former lover is a defendant in a Holocaust war crimes trial, arrives in cinemas this December.
