Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard, who played Tony Stark's best friend and military liaison in the superhero blockbuster, after Marvel failed to agree financial terms with the actor to bring him back for the sequel.
The character is expected to assume the mantle of armour-wearing hero War Machine in Iron Man 2.
Director Jon Favreau is returning to direct the sequel, with stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow expected to reprise their roles as Stark and his assistant Pepper Potts respectively.
Iron Man 2 is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on May 7, 2010.
