The director, who is helming the upcoming Star Trek movie, remarked that he is producing the film in the hope that it grabs people in the way Star Wars affected him.
He told Entertainment Weekly that he "preferred a more visceral experience" such as Star Wars, while his smart friends liked the Star Trek franchise.
Abrams commented that his take on the Star Trek universe provides an optimistic view of humanity's future.
"I think a movie that shows people of various races working together and surviving hundreds of years from now is not a bad message to put out right now.
"In a world where a movie as incredibly produced as The Dark Knight is raking in gazillions of dollars, Star Trek stands in stark contrast. It was important to me that optimism be cool again."
