Ricky Gervais vetoed a kiss with Téa Leoni at the end of new movie Ghost Town as he felt it lacked resonance.

The comedian, who plays dentist Bertrum Pincus in the romcom, came up with an alternative ending after deciding that the proposed smooch "didn't mean anything".

He explained: "I see these romcoms and they just go in and kiss, then live happy ever after. I think 'well, how do we know?' One of my favourite films which we tried to emulate was The Apartment where at the end she just goes: 'Shut up and deal.'

"We came up with something. She says 'It hurts when I smile' and I say 'I can fix that' and we thought that was nice, as he's a dentist. So it's not your average schmaltzy formula romcom."
