The Walk The Line star told Extra that Two Lovers, his upcoming film with Gwyneth Paltrow, will be his last.
"I want to take this opportunity to give you the exclusive, and to talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor," he said at a benefit in San Francisco to honour Paul Newman.
He added: "I'm not doing films anymore, I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."
Charlatans singer Tim Burgess revealed earlier this year that he had recorded tracks with Phoenix, but admitted that his perfectionism was holding up an album release.
"I think he just keeps scrapping everything or redoing everything," Burgess said. "I'm sad to say that I think it's one of those records that may never come out, to be honest with you."
