The original 1963 thriller revolves around an executive who is presented with the dilemma of either using money he has raised to pay the ransom for his kidnapped son or complete a crucial business deal.
David Mamet's High And Low script was originally intended as a project for Martin Scorsese to direct, but the Departed helmer has stepped aside for Nichols. He will instead serve as executive producer.
Nichols's directing credits include The Graduate, Working Girl, Closer and Charlie Wilson's War.
Several other remakes of Kurosawa films are being developed in Hollywood. Steven Spielberg is circling a new version of Ikiru for DreamWorks, The Weinstein Company is planning to make Seven Samurai and a new take on Rashoman has been lined up for 2010.
