Warner Bros has enlisted J. Michael Straczynski to write its Forbidden Planet remake, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The 1956 original centred on a journey to a far-away planet to check on a colony expedition which lost contact with Earth. Upon arrival, the crew discover that a scientist, who has had his intelligence boosted after encountering alien technology, and his daughter have survived attacks from an unseen monster.
David Twohy will direct the remake with Joel Silver producing.
Straczynski is the creator of cult sci-fi show Babylon 5 and the writer of Angelina Jolie's upcoming film Changeling.
The idea for a new Forbidden Planet has shuffled around Hollywood for several years, with Warner Bros picking up the remake from DreamWorks earlier this year.
James Cameron was once attached to direct an earlier incarnation of the project.
