Both studios have confirmed that they are in talks to fund the movies after Universal pulled out of the project.
Paramount will reportedly distribute the films in North America and some English-speaking territories, and Sony will handle its release elsewhere, according to Variety.
Spielberg is said to be directing the first movie, which he hopes will be ready for release in 2010, while Lord Of The Rings helmer Peter Jackson will be in charge for the second instalment.
Last month, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were both linked to the project.
