Previous releases in the franchise include Oliver Stone and John Milius's 1982 film Conan The Barbarian and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan The Destroyer in 1984.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ratner will work with Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate Films on the project.
He is also currently working on Beverly Hills Cop IV with Paramount.
Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly (Sahara, A Sound Of Thunder) are scripting the barbarian epic with the aim of releasing it in 2010.
